There is a move in some states and local governments to eliminate spending on promotional items.

Promotional products are under fire. Recently I was watching my local news station and they were doing one on those “investigative” reports that they tend to do doing sweeps month. This reporter was confronting the local government representative about the money that is being spent on items for giveaways with the logo on them.

Although the person tried to convey that these were an important part of their marketing program the reporter had their own agenda and asked if this was the way to spend the tax payers’ money. This is an example how in this age of looking to reduce spending people are looking for the easy decisions and avoiding the hard ones. Saving cents but continuing to spend dollars.

In February California Governor Gerry Brown issued an executive order to stop state agencies from purchasing these items. Does this really address the states fiscal problems?

As we professionals know, promotional items are an integral part of marketing. Whether it is PR of a state agency and its services or a campaign button, promotional items keep the name of the advertiser out there for people to see and remember. Promotional products represent one of the most cost effective repeat methods of advertising.
